X2 I'm not sure how it works but my best dogs tend to find me. Maybe I'm terrible at picking puppies...

Anything with cur, Airedale, catahoula, jack russel, jagdt in it will be good. Hard to beat a mountain cur or Airedale as far as temperament, size, prey drive. Curs are cheaper and easier to find.

Can NOT beat a blue heeler (or red heeler) for a trapping dog. All the ones we've ever had were the best! Our red heeler will find rattlesnakes, whup 'coons and over critters, tree bobcats, dig up rats, etc, etc, etc. [Linked Image]

Lots of questions surface with your original request. Do you want a companion dog that you can take occasionally on your line or a dog that will be a hunting/trapline dog primarily and maybe a companion 2nd? What kind of conditions will the dog live in? House, Kennel or mixture? Size? Temperament with other dogs/animals and humans? Try the local shelter for a rescue dog but tell the folks there what you are looking for and are willing to wait. A dog less than 2 years old can still be "taught" what you have in store for it. I tell this to everyone and other folks who have heard it are tired of it but I am going to repeat it here: " most dogs will hunt somewhat. Smart ones take less time to catch on to what you want. But the 2 most important commands you can teach him/her are COME and NO". Vital to successful hunts and captures". If you do decide to buy a purebred one from a breeder... by all means ask to go out with the pup's parents to see what they are like in the field. If they decline then you don't want that one. A smart hunting dog is hard to find be it mixed breed or purebred as culling of the non-producers seems to be a thing of the past.... my take

my best all around dog so far was a black lab.got her off a taxi driver in omaha, nebraska.she was one of 15 pups.paid a 50 lb bag of dog food for her.turns out she was a pointing lab. ticked a lot of the guys with britteny's! she was also a coon hunting machine, silent never barked untill treed.she got 8 in one cornfield one night. she was voice, hand signal and whisle trained.
have had lots of beagles and coonhounds. walkers, bluetick and redbone's. most where akc.
i'm thinking i'll look for a cur. i'm retired now, so it'll probable be with me 24/7. females seem to be less hard headed than males.

We have a mountain cur, a redbone pup, and 2 mutts. Of them, I'd say the cur would probably make the best trapline dog. They're a lot less stubborn than hounds too, lol.

Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

Here’s a site where you can adopt mountain curs.

I got a 4 year old Heeler that the best on drags to the point I'm 100% drags now. Finds posts coyotes and cats are using, runs down small pigs, trees and protects. Wish i would have been using them for years. Got a lot of videos of him working on FB on Down South Trappers.
