So I have an opportunity this fall to do some coyote trapping several hours away from home, but with this virus thing going on and the fur market being in the tank, not sure it's worth doing. On one hand there would be little if any, competition with plenty of land to trap. This could also lead to more places later if things go right as locals say the song dogs are thick. I have a place to stay so it would only be gas and food, but I still doubt I could make enough to even cover expenses. The experience would be priceless and could be alot of fun. But on the other hand I would be no different than the people from the metro area heading up to quarantine up at their cabin. What's everyone's opinion?

Sounds like a good opportunity but there are other variables - do you have a full time job? Are you doing this on vacation days? Do you have other responsibilities back home?
If you are young, no commitments, and have the time - go for it.

I agree with Artrapper16. If you have the opportunity and good health, go! One of the hardest things to live with is regrets. (Trust me on that one). And you just might regret passing up this opportunity later on.

I agree on the part of not regretting doing vs doing it and regretting it. I had to retire early with a disability so I have the time. Health wise my Dr. said get outside and get plenty of exercise, both mentally and physically. Trapping fits this bill so that is how I got back into this gig after so many years. I've been planning this trip since last fall and now with this Covid thing just didn't know if I should go through with it or not. Really hate to pass up an opportunity like this one as I'm sure if all goes well, will be back at it again next year. Thanks everyone.

My thoughts have been the same and wanted to get an idea of what everyone here thought.. I may be a bit over cautious as when things shut down, many from the metro areas headed up to there cabins to quarantine, only to bring it along with them. We had 0 cases around here until that happened, I just didn't want to be accused of something like that. I talked to a local guy today who deer hunts in that area and said he didn't see any problems either. I hope to do some scouting sometime in the next few weeks and start getting permission from landowners and such. Wanted to do this earlier this summer before everything greened up but then the shutdown happened and that was that. then I planned to make a trip there this weekend but canceled due to the extreme heat and humidity (I don't do well in heat anymore with my disability). This is something I have always wanted to do and who knows what will happen if I where to wait another year. Thanks for the words of support everybody, looks like it's still on then!

If you had to retire early due to a disability, you may risk loosing your disability status by taking on a physically demanding endeavor. Keep that in mind.
If you have a disability, could it affect your ability to trap under rough winter conditions?

How are you fixed for health insurance out of state?

You really need to have enough cash with you to cover lodging/rent, food, a major vehicle repair (or two) and a stash of cash to cover the incidentals of living away from home.

Other than that, it sounds like a neat venture.

My posting is about trapping away from home under the Covid rules and requirements. The rest has all been taken into consideration and taken care of.

I don't know what the heck your question is. Covid will be done once the election in over, so don't worry about it.

20scout if you been planning it go and do it. I wish I had the time to go and do some long lining. The covid thing is the worst you will have to do is wearing a mask is at the the gas station for gas and a treat. Get after them. I dont think there will be a lot of people chasing anything. I have people calling me already in this area wanting me to trap coyotes. I wish I had more time, but am going to try and do a little more than I have the last couple seasons. Good luck!!This is the answer I was looking for. As far as regretting something, it would be spreading or getting Covid-19. I guess I should ask the locals in that area to see what they say. Unless they say otherwise I still plan on going for it.

Don't want to sound like a JA but why are you asking the question. Away from people, new/bigger area. If the market is still in the tank save em for when it comes out... like they said above.. wear a mask and go forward.... nothing to think about other than if you have enough traps...
Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.
 Or so I've been told.

Maybe I missed it but as far as I know the word is coyote prices are still high. If that's the case through winter you should be able to make money and have a great time. I sure wouldn't pass up that kind of opportunity if I had the time.At best we are looking at some type of price adjustment as there are a lot of coyotes left over from this last season still looking for a home. At worst there are possible shipping restrictions of wild fur that may cripple the fur industry severely, still to early to say for sure

Got this post mixed up with another website. My bad. But to make this work you’ll have to have some cash to keep you in groceries, vehicle repairs, gas, etc. Sounds potentially Like a fun trip. If fur prices are down and you can’t make enough to reasonably cover expenses, this year might be your scouting or cold-rolling year with the following year where you make some money.
