Works great, i use the small 3 foot snare when running them down a rod.

Floating log sets work great as well as leaning pole sets. The latter is in Paul’s video Beaver sites and sets. SURELY You asked for that DVD for a birthday or Christmas gift?
Do a search for the word torpedo, and a thread should pop up using a homemade log out of PVC pipe to hang a snare from.

We only have open water down here, and I have snared a few hundred mostly using Paul’s leaning pole set.
If the floating log is 8 to 10 feet long you can hang two snares on each side also

It is, and is exactly as you envision it. I make short snares, I think 36" with a swivel at the end in case they get hung up before going south down the drowner. I like a little deeper than the max of snare, maybe 40-42" in case I get only a front foot. But I don't remember that happening except under ice snaring. 3" off the bottom or 3" above water depending on set. I use this a lot in summer ADC.

If using chain/wire/cable I suggest 50# on the end if not mucky. They can walk in 4X4 mode on a leash. And Mr. Murphy lives in a beaver pond writing his laws for things to go wrong.

For that matter snares work excellent on 24 hr checks on long chains anchored out in deep water with enough they can get 2 ft or so up the bank. They are pretty calm in a snare if room to get in and out.

I snare a lot of beaver but never try to drown them. If they can get up on the bank they just kind of sit there. Even in the water on a long extension cable they tend to just swim around. They will chew everything they can into wood chips, but it keeps them busy. You can snare a run or slide just like you would set it with a bodygrip. The leaning pole and the floating log work very well also. I normally look for a spot that is naturally occurring to make a set similar to a leaning pole. Plenty of them in the cypress swamps I mainly trap. All of my beaver snares are 42" of cable with a slim lock and I attach them to a 5 to 10 foot extension.

This one was snared between a cypress tree and a knee, snare set 2/3 submerged. He is sitting 15' from a gravel road. From the grade you couldn't see him or much of the chew damage. If the beaver is sitting still they blend in well.
