Ok im trying my hand at making waxed dirt, but doing it at a gallon at a time. So would it be about 1 to 2 cups of wax to a gallon? I know bigger batch would be quicker but im doing this why I put up corn.

1lb per gallon works for me.

1 cup of wax equals 1/4 pound , I start with 3/4 cup per gallon but some soil types take more. the more sand in the soil the less wax needed. In the end I want it to keep its shape when compressed after cooling, so it beds the trap rock solid. I'm using sandy loam this season and 1/2 of wax is the magic.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

The first couple of times i made waxed dirt i went by the "book",like the above poster mentioned its takes different amounts of wax/dirt.
Now i keep it simple get the sand/ dirt hot start adding wax while mixing, when i see it darken from the wax melting i grab a handfull and throw in a bucket full of water,if it floats i keep mixing until it has cooled some,if it sinks add more wax until it all floats.
I have found that to get the sand/dirt evenly coated is most important. So keep on stirring until you have zero clumps, takes quite bait of stirring mixing. When its below zero i want it to pour like regular dry sand/dirt.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help guys. I got 2 gallons made so far and it seems pretty good. I think I need to add more wax though. When I squeeze it into a ball still falls apart some. This dirt hasn't seen the light of day until I brought it out of my crawlspace last year. I'll keep plugging away and see how it goes. I'm using a metal tray that was left in my basement and one of my old windows to cook it.

I was told it should not be able to clump in your hand.

I made a bunch using solar method but am making more just 1 gallon at a time using an old electric crockpot and it works well. I'm putting about a cup and a half to one gallon of dirt stir as it gets hot and melts the dirt looks wet when fully coated and soaked in. Dump it out on a flat surface i use a sheet of plywood. Spread it out to cool and get all of the heat out. Use your gloved hands once it starts to cool to break it up fine and once completely cooled I pack it into clean 1 gallon milk jugs for easy carrying, stashing, and pouring at sets and remakes.
I got two boys and its easy to save 50-60 milk jugs all year and clean and rinse those out well plus the caps. At end of season reuse them or recycle them.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I use a turkey roaster to dry and to make my wax dirt. Amount of wax is dependent on the soil I get like the others said. I get about 2.5-3 gallons in the roaster.
