You guys that have worked with rattlesnake do the bones eventually break down if left to age? I have a batch I made two years ago and I can’t remember if I picked out the bones or they have now dissolved. It’s aged two years, with my other goodies, and smells nothing like rotten snakes.

I've never worked with snakes but with my experience with fish bones, if the liquid is very acidic like vinegar or lemon juice acidic levels it might eat away the bones. They might not go away but they will become very brittle, especially over time. Im not sure about snakes but this can happen sometimes if you pickle fish.

I grind my snake bait and the bones dissappear.I didn't think whole bones would but not a lot of experience there. The size of the bones could make a difference.

Most critters that have small, fine bones the bones will dissolve or break down given enough time.

Ok another snake question. Do you stop it after a couple months and add your goodies or let it break all the way down? Not looking for any trade secrets, just from those piddlers like me that are simply playing around. First batch I made a couple years ago I added a fixative and Stop it. And also put in my other ingredients to let it all age in. I caught some with it last year, coyotes. It has an even smoother better smell now.

My 2 cents is do it both ways and make some test sets to see which way the coyotes like it. Some bases I use both lightly tainted and very tainted deepening on how I'm using it. Im guessing you used a preservative to stop the first batch as a fixative doesn't stop the aging process. I think some get preservative and fixative confused.
