Last fall NE WI had a series of heavy rains and as a result of one of the floods my trap was washed into a culvert with a diameter of 20". I searched for it several times before freeze up but couldn't find it. Eventually, I located it 35' inside the pipe! I spent several nights trying to think of ways to retrieve it - drain snake, grapple.... but none of them worked until today. I used my snow roof rake which is put together with sections which put me out to 20'. To this I added two pieces of 1" plastic conduit which I duck tapped into place. It needed the snow rake to provide "backbone" and the flexibility of the conduit to move it into position to snag the trap. On the end of the conduit, I bolted an old piece of hardware I had laying around which was used for holding jackets in my garage. I got it passed the trap and pulled back and hooked the trap and base.

Posting this in hopes that it shortens the learning curve for someone else if they find themselves with an "unreachable" trap.

I added the orange paint so I could see where my hook end was.

I hope you learned your lesson on using tie plates on smooth surfaces.

I made a pole like that once to fish a bunch of traps out of the river. I slid into the water after slipping on the leaves and mud (hard but essential lesson to learn) while I had one hand full of traps and the other full of rebar. I kept waiting to hit the bottom but it never came so when the water got up to my shoulders I had to let go and swim for it. I came back the next day with a pole and a hook and fished the traps out. It was the one time in my life I was glad my trap chains were tangled. Never got the stakes back but I got all my traps.

I have a really strong magnet (Google Magnet Fishing) for situations like that. I bet you could still rescue the rebar.

Great idea- with my luck the next build would be a snow rake culvert removal tool... Glad it worked!

Eagle eye, lmao. Great idea with the magnet though. This happened about 8 years ago. Not sure I could even find the spot. That and the floods we’ve had since then probably have them buried by now.
