I'm thinking about loading up the truck camper and making a tour of the UP. Just wondering what primitive camping is available or camping in general?

I'll have my pop-up truck camper and can pull in pretty much anywhere.

I'd kinda' like to run up through Crystal Fall to Marquette then back to the West and down through Wakefield or Bessemer. I'm sure there will be some opportunities in the Ottawa.

Any help of info is appreciated.

There are zillions of State Forest Campgrounds, as well as a bunch of Forest Service campgrounds in the area you mention. Also, in Michigan, unlike Wisconsin, you can basically park and camp on public land just about anywhere you please that isn't within a 1/2 mile of one of the state/USFS campgrounds (so your not competing with them!) All you need is a free permit on state land. I'm not sure what the Feds require any more. Stop into a DNR field office, USFS office, or flag down a Conservation Officer, they can give you all the details. One fly in the ointment....Covid had required a ban on public land camping earlier in the year. I have no idea if that is still in effect.

Print off a stack of the permits to tape to your truck every stop. There is plenty of 2 tracks to cruise and find a suitable secluded camping location. No use spending money at a campground every day when you have millions of acres to camp on for free. You can camp in one spot for up to 2 weeks then you have to move your camp a mile away.

I just downloaded the permits. Looks easy.

I'm only going to have a long weekend, but I'll make the most of it.

Any cool places to check out on the route I outlined?

Thanks for the info guys!
