So I made some mink boxes for 160's this winter and now I am starting to worry about dogs. Is that a real concern?

And dont say mink boxes aren't worth the hassle. I've read that and still stubborn enough to try. grin

Not a problem with the 10 to 12 inch quick detach roof you are supposed to put on it

Probably not on a river or creek bank but not close to farm buildings or walking trails.

Make long box and recess the trap deep into the box close to the bait and use a restricted 2 1/2 inch entrance hole lid cover.

Thanks guys. I was considering a hole like the pics show. Why do you recess the trap so far back from the hole?

To keep a small dog, or mainly barn cats when trapping farm areas, from getting its head through the hole and triggering the trap. Also setting the trap back close to the bait gets the mink stable at the bait for a consistent humane catch. The animal is not traveling through the trap to get to the bait which can result in poor hip catches'

If you don't have any more luck with mink boxes than I ever did, I think you'll wish you never tried them at all. IMO them traps would be better off as blind sets or bottom edge sets.

I tried a few mink boxes last season. I had them on definite location, and they stayed empty all season long.

They can work, we've all seen pictures of guys having success. But it seems like those guys are always far north and food sources are scarce in deep winter. Here where I live we had 5 days that the temp got below 32°, so I don't have those conditions.

But it's definitely worth a shot, they're a pretty low maintenance set. Good luck to you

With mink it works with the trap way in. It does not with coon in my experience.

If you place them On the bare Ice they will melt right Into the ice and then when the sun goes down they will freeze In.

Even here where we have deep cold winters there's a lot better options. Common to find mink tracks circling and up and over boxes.
