Has anyone out there had any luck with using ground muskrat meat as a base for a canine bait, specifically for coyote? I am going to try using some this year, after adding a reputable bait solution to it, of course.

Just curious if it's been done before?

Yup lots of people do with success. I haven’t much because I don’t usually trap rats but I know not to throw away a rat carcass if I get one. You should be able to use the search function to find previous threads about it.

I have taken 5 gallon bucket full of fresh and tainted rats out to dispose of. I put them where I would walk by running my line. Went out next day everything was gone, just a spot on ground. So I'd go for it.

Rats just have that smell that will attract any meat eater. A chunk down the hole will do the job.

I grind up all of the rats I catch except for the intestines and preserve with sodium benzoate and use them for bait as is. Everything will eat a muskrat is what my uncle taught me when I was young. When it gets cold I use a little call lure nearby.

I plan to quarter as many as I can get my hands on this year and freeze them to be used later. If frozen fish works in the arctic a little frozen rat will work in Illinois !

Remember, the coyote quest guy caught 700 or 800 coyotes last season, mostly on chunked muskrat and urine-no lure. Some food for thought.

Robert Waddell—-Beav’s friend. It was a great thread. Don’t know where he got all his ‘rat meat, but that and urine was all he used.

Save all the fat and such from fleshing rats, preserve it fresh with SB and add some BTO. Work well for all predators and its free..

Irv Schirmer a master trapper who just recently passed on told me everything eats muskrat. And he swore that rotted down muskrat was one of the best long distance call lures he ever used.
