...stamp their business name or symbol on fur they tan? (I didn't want to hijack Nova's thread, but his awesome tannery pics got me wondering.)

I haven't noticed it on the dozens of tanned deer hides I've bought over the years, to make 'buckskins', or the few tanned furs I've acquired either, for that matter.

The deer hides all have holes punched in one edge. Some sort of code I suppose.

Not the tanneries I use. When Moyles first started many years ago, they stamped a small imagine of a mink and their name on the pelts they dressed. They haven’t done that for years.

Many tanneries use codes punched into the hide. Usually in about of the way part of the pelt.

All the wholesale taxidermist tanneries I used would use a punch to mark the pelts with a customer number.....otherwise they wouldn't have any way to tell the pelts apart. I also punch a code, usually a letter of the alphabet, to tell my customers items apart. I also made detailed sketches of each cape/hide/pelt and recorded that as well (with all the bullet holes, skinning cuts, etc.). You couldn't tell one from another otherwise.

Moyles uses a system of colored cable ties to identify which pelts belong to which customers. Fast way to sort pelts when finished.

One time I sent a batch of 110 ermine. Each pelt had 2 cable ties - one purple, one yellow. Easy to pick out my ermine but time consuming to attach 220 cable ties. LOL
