Hey all, first year beaver trapper looking for someone to spell out a good drowning cable set up and what kind of equipment I’ll be needing to make some sets. Particularly I’m looking for advice on cable length and how you secure your trap to the drowning lock? I was thinking about purchasing some of the premade cables on fnt’s site. Wondering if I should go with the 6 or 10 foot length. Thanks in advance!

If you can use the 8 or 10 foot rebar drowning rods they are great. Buy the kit from F&T and get the rebar from a local building supply. You will have less problems with weights getting dragged around and a beaver not drown the way you planned.

I will never go back to non-adjustables cables. Find the thread that possum skinner does a tutorial. If you can’t find it, PM me.

I make mine 15 ft long using 7x19 1/8” cable. Adjustable so I can make a set and reach deep enough water and adjustable allows me to get the cable nice and taut, something you -must- do to avoid Kinked cable. 7x19 is better than 7x7 for this, but 7x7 will work if that’s all you can get.

I rig mine with camlock that has 4” of cable with a piece of flat stock that I can put through a trap swivel for tool-less trap exchanges. I put a stop 18-24” from the bottom end so that the beaver won’t be at my stake or weight.

Again, start using adjustable cables and you won’t want to go back to non adjustables imo

Look on Minnesota Trapline Supply. They sell premade drowner cables. Add a weight on the deep end and a stake and trap at shore.

I place a cable stop about 2' from the deep stake. This will keep the beaver from winding around that stake and powering out.

A large washer with 2 holes drilled through It will give you an adjustable set up.
