I am looking at putting a system in at the cabin to catch water for drinking and run a 12 volt pump to pump it into the cabin from underground. I think a guy could bury a small tank and collect water and use it pretty effectively and have safe drinking water.

Plenty of it here, this year.

Made it almost 3 years without censor!

I used to collect and use rain water until I realized the air currents from China/Asia and the pollution that was potentially in it. .

Another thing to consider is if you burn wood and use your roof as a catch, your water will taste like soot.

As pure as rain water is just remember every impurity on the collection system ends up in the tank.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I was going to make one of those home made Berkey systems to clean and purify it after I pump it into the house for the drinking purposes

For a short time I drank rain water that I saved from rain running off our metal roof but quit using it after seeing all the bird droppings on the roof during a dry spell.

Yeah I have used it too but couldn't get past the soot taste. Works for dishes though

I'd worry about the zinc coming in the rain water from a tin roof. The ash would etch it just right to flow down. Asphalt shingles do they not have a percent of asbestosis to make them fire -retardant?

I think for drinking purposes anyone who didn't filter is after they collected it would be not too mart with all the unknowns in the water.
Berkey filters or other types clean it to 99.9 percent clean including chemicals from what I have read. The main supply would be used for cleaning but for indigestion filtering it would be the smartest.

I think you could get indigestion just as well, if not better, without bothering to filter.

A capful of bleach in a 55 gallon plastic drum would kill most things and taste no more than city water. We bring jugs of drinking water and catch dishes and washup water.
