Saw a picture on time of a bunch of cows hit by lightning at a round bale feeder. A good breeding age cow goes for $2000, around here these days. Bulls are $5000 and up. eek

A rancher in Wy that I trapped on years ago, lost a pile in a strike. Don't remember the number for sure, but I believe it was in the upper teens. Told me I ought to be able to catch twenty coyotes off of them, then came in with a dozer and buried them. Told him he wasn't much help! lol

Nothing will eat them after a lighting strike... not even buzzards

They will mummify,

I know I had one stuck at a water tank a couple of months ago...

Around the time I first noticed this real cute girl in grade school so probably 1985 or so. Her dad had a pen of fat cattle ready to ship. Lightning hit the bunk rail while they were eating. Killed 13 stone dead. At that time they were really struggling on the farm and that about did them in. Something I’ll never forget. They finally recovered and I married the girl so happy ends all the way around.

Yeah that eventually worked its way out I guess Pawnee.

The most I saw dead was 3 and the first one I was happy to see gone because she crawled fences until they were so loose everyone else would follow her out.

I went over another hill and there was a good cow. One more hill and another. They had their heads reaching thru a 4 strand (state of the art back then) and when one got struck it must have traveled down the wires and zapped the other 2. We was way to poor for steel posts and evidently old hedge posts didn't ground it anywhere near quick enough for the other 2.

Yep, way beyond "extra rare cold in the center" for me.
Send it back and try again.

Years ago when many dairy cows pastured in WI many left some trees so there would be shade for the cows in the heat of the summer. There were many instances of cows killed or hit by lightning in those days, not so common anymore. Cows are extremely sensitive to electricity and thus can be put down with far less voltage then humans. Due to their low tolerance for electricity stray voltage was a real issue on many farms here in WI. Several law suits over time were one and or lost as farmers sued the power companies. The newer large setups are wired and grounded very differently than in the past and thus far fewer issues.

I can't recall the number, but I remember seeing dead cows all the way around a local fellas bail ring. Guessing the lightning struck the hay ring and fried everyone with their head in the ring. It was under some trees as I recall so possibly it was the trees that caused the problem. Other than that one time singles is all I have seen lightning struck.

LL, my uncle Bob was building a half mile of fence a few years ago and quit for the day with a wire strung, but still on the ground. Lightning hit that wire on the ground in the night and vaporized a couple hundred yards of it. Dangdest thing, could see a burn mark in the grass, but the wire was just gone. crazy
