If the gills run down the stem, it is a type of oyster, lets see the bottom. Just ate some off a cottonwood that looked like that on top. I was not joking.

Look at the small one to the left of the big one by your hand, Those are oysters. The ones we got here were huge too. I would say where it grew was the reason it came out round because it wasn't on the side of a tree.

We had abut 4" of rain last week and cold after basically a hot drought, maybe it was the perfect storm for huge oyster mushrooms.

We have not had enough rain here, still very dry.

I like to slice them in thin pieces and then flour them and fry them in butter. I wish I could have found the mess you did!

I have not seen the bottom, but he said the gills ran from the head down the stem, so if it does I think oyster.

I've seen oysters that size and bigger, we called them elephant ears when I was a kid but they grew off the side of the tree like in flippers picture. I think he may be right too but I'd need to see the bottoms as well. There are several different types of oyster mushrooms. I have seen at least 5 different types in the woods here various times of the year too. That’s exactly what I said to my son when I saw them “look, elephant ears”. Then when we got there I wasn’t so sure because of the shape, so symmetrical.
