If you had to choose the best canoe for water trapping what would it be?

I'm currently in the market as the one I have is just to bully for me.

Typically I'm by myself, however everyone once in a while someone tags along. I mainly traps marsh and rivers. I amno fan of a tippy canoe.

I do prefer a square stern so when I'm done setting, I can easily fire up the 3 hp motor and scoot back to the truck without wasting time paddling the long distance back.

Thanks for your input

Golden hawk also makes a 10ft square stern that weighs in at 50lb.

I saw a post like this and had to build this set-up. It was a great idea. The motor was a long tail and I think it was a 4hp. The canoe has an upswept bottom. You NEED to be careful when beaching it. I found the motor too small to push through much, but the weight added easily made an empty boat EASY to flip...2-3 times. I spent a fair amount of time in small boats, but I think this canoe is best WITHOUT the longtail motor. Maybe a trolling motor with the battery in the bow. I parted out the motor and the canoe and sold both. I use a pirogue now, and stay drier when trapping beaver and otter.

Golden Hawk will beef up the transom if you plan to use a motor a lot, the rear raised transom allows you to paddle forward and back with ease. I also love the skirt cover as an option, you can keep everything dry and stowed- we also use it for a decoy hauler towed behind our duck boat. It's the most stable canoe I've ever owned.

Sportspal look for a 16 footer, almost unflippable and very stable

I have a Golden hawk 10' standard canoe. I'm not sure what you would have to do to flip it. I stand up in it and haul a lot of weight in it while trapping.

I have a 17 ft Grumman aluminum. Yes it rather big for one person and can be kind of heavy at times, but crawling in and out of it I have yet to tip it. Now I probably will now that I said that! I just sit in front seat and paddle it backwards. Has done me well for the money I paid for it.

I have had Aluma craft Grumman in Sportscraft in the sport boat configuration. If it’s not Rocky the sport craft is hard to beat because it is so late. But the aluminum is a bolt like a can of Blatz beer and will rip easy on rocks.

The Grohmans or is heavy as a tank. Winona makes a royal Lex one that I think would be extremely durable. None of them had like a canoe and I end up using the three horse more often than not

Depends on the water.
Ditch,pond,creek,river or lake?
Ditch and pond hopping a lightweight sportspal is great for throwin in and out of a truck or 4 wheeler.
River or lake you would need a bigger canoe, square stern, with a motor-even a freighter on big water.
For medium sized creeks something in between would be best.

thanks all! i really like the idea of the golden hawks with the raised transom, however shipping is nearly as much as the canoe itself frown

I thought there would be more posts showing other options but here is my experience. I have 3 similar canoes, Two Golden Hawk and one Cranberry Creek. (Cranberry creek is an offshoot of Golden Hawk. Two have flared square sterns one does not. I was all interested in the squares later for using a motor. I quickly found out they don't work out very well for my methods. With a trolling motor high up in the rear and even with the batteries with a long lead in the front you put a lot of weight in the end which takes the nice wide flat bottom of the canoe nearly out of the water and they can flip easily and quickly. I did that ONCE. Almost always I set in the front seat and paddle backward. I can reach to either side or over the front to set. This keeps the base of the canoe in the water and very stable. The keel also helps a lot but can make moving over stumps and through rice etc. harder to do.
I can put 120 7 foot bamboo stakes and 120 stoploss traps in two totes and quite easily move around if needed. At 72 I need to stretch more frequently then I did when younger and having a stable canoe under me helps.
My first one is 28 years old and has seen a lot of use. They fatigue crack in places but I use the gorilla glue adhesive and that holds really well. I have worn out both seats in the old one but have them back and working well.
I also now put a 8 foot sheet of this roll plastic for door ways, aisles etc. on the bottom. That saves grinding into the bottom the mud, sand and stones from getting in and out of the canoe.

I have been looking for the lightest canoe possible which I guess is the Wee Lassie which is 10'6" long and weighs 16 lbs. I am in my 60sand want something light that I can throw in the back of my truck. Not sure if it would be the best trapping canoe but it should work great for fishing in small ponds and brooks

Does anyone own or have used one? Thoughts? Likes? Dislikes?
