I know that people use deer and muskrat and hogs for bait making... I have some squirrels i shot this last weekend and some goose meat scraps i would like to use for bait. Anybody use those for making predator bait? I figured it would be good for mink. Anyone have any ideas about using those meats?

they will work fine for any predator, not just mink
ideas? as in steps to do the deed?
chunk em, add bait solution, SB (if needed), since some solutions already have SB (ask the maker before purchase) let it gas off a few weeks, jar it up, easy peasy.

haven't you joined the free trapping lure/bait book club yet?

I’m not going to second guess what anyone else does with they’re meat , but I’ve been using fresh stuff the last couple of years alongside of commercial bait and I’m liking the fresh stuff more and more . I’ve used whole road killed squirrel and I’ve used leftover parts after cleaning them and actually have had better luck with a head or hide versus the whole critter. You may have good luck grinding and adding bait solutions and preservatives, I like chunking and freezing in plastic coffee cans. Wax paper is your friend!

I find the same thing on fresh meat testing this summer. I was surprised. This Fall two traps at each location, same set. Fresh vrs. preserved.

Thanks guys for the info.

Traprjohn... i was thinking about how to utilize the meat and fur in a trap set. Hide vs meat, different types of scents i can add to compliment the squirrel, rabbit, goose, duck. Im not sure what you mean by free trapping lure/ bait book club. Are you talking about the free catalogs from trappers supply stores?

Golf ball... ive thought about picking up road killed animals for bait but wasnt too sure how they would work. I will have to try using the head and hide in my set. Great ideas.

080808... that would be a great test. It would be cool to find out if fresh works better than store bought baits... ( not saying fresh is better because there are some great baits of there that clearly work well year after year) i like making my own stuff.. kind of a pride thing. I think i may start a fresh vs store bought thread and see what people say. I will definitely have to try the fresh vs store bought and see what happens.

We preserve our baits fresh......, chunk, solution,SB all the same day.

Not catalogs, getting free lure/bait books and gear, FROM the catalogs!

your local mentor was sposd to teach ya this .....
, get several different trapping supply catalogs, like MTP, Sterling Fur, FandT, PCS, Flemings, Northern Outdoors, Trap Shack, Schmitt enterprises, Southeastern outdoor supplies, JR & Sons, Grawes, rpoutdoors, etc etc, THEN circle gear/books you/want need, and give the catalogs to loved ones to buy your Birthday and Christmas and July 4 and Easter and Anniversary gifts. Explain to them, you want their money to go towards what you will use and need, as opposed to another sweater hanging in your closet. WORKS GREAT in our family.

Am I the only guy that got muskrat glands and bobcat urine for Christmas?

I don't know a thing about MN laws but in a lot of States using game animals for bait would be illegal. Here, squirrels and rabbits are not protected.Migratory birds are a Federal thing.Just be sure you know the laws before you get into it.All those should be decent bait though.

The thing about bait Is once you add a bait solution to your meat base It's going to change the odor of that bait. So If you decide to go with fresh bait I would just freeze for later use and I wouldn't add any thing to It.

I also like using fresh natural baits.

Just take the parts your going to use and place them on a cookie sheet and then freeze them. When frozen dump the individual parts In a large container. When your ready to start trapping just take out what you need and let that bait thaw at the set.
That's what I do with my rats. I skin them and gut them remove the tail and then cut them up Into chunks then freeze like I mentioned. This year I just may leave the fur on since rats aren't going to be worth much.

That fur may have added appeal Beav , can’t help but think that’s why squirrel hides and heads work so well .
