Three times the amount of deer licenses were sold in NY on day one compared to day 1 of last year. Hunter safety courses were moved to online due to Covid and had twice as many participants as in the previous year. Imagine that, if you remove barriers to entry more people will participate! Hunter and trapper safety courses are a good thing but making them a mandatory barrier to entry is in my humble opinion a reason both sports are dying. Moving the courses online and making them easier to complete should be something more states should consider in order to boost participation numbers and expand a conservation mindset. https://www.gohunt.com/read/news/license-sales-surge-in-new-york-for-regular-deer-season#gs.hlzhka

Talked to the G & F couple days ago. Said the number of applicants for tags and license sales are up over 30% compared to last year. I told her Ray Charles could have seen that coming. Put people on lock down then open the gates and see what happens

VT just went to a one buck bag limit and I know a lot of guys that have turned to bow hunting NY because of it.
The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

I like NY's seasons and bag limits better than PA's. Their license fees are reasonable too. I can't imagine hunting in a state with no hunter education requirement.

100% online courses are not good. Part of it can be online but there also needs to be hands on training especially for the safety part. Same with trapping education. Taking a complete online trapping education course would be like watching a dvd on trapping compared to taking personal instructions. What if that is the barrier to entry that stops kids from trapping? I had no mentor, no one showed me how to trap I just found some traps and did it. Kids cannot do that now and in my experience it keeps them from trying trapping at all.

Taking a complete online trapping education course would be like watching a dvd on trapping compared to taking personal instructions. In Pa, if an online trapping course would be anything like the 'in person" hunter/trapper ed course, it would only take about 5+/- minutes. They prioritize very little time on the trapping portion. I would have to believe if Pa offered a 100% online trapping course, it would be much more educational. Better yet, require time spent at Trapperman.
