I just received my black bear hide back from the tannery today. The tannery told me it look a little freezer burned in a few spots when he got it. The hide had been in the freezer for about 1.5 years. Below are a couple pictures of the hide I received. In my opinion they over fleshed the hide greatly. However, I am not 100% familiar with the tanning process to know how it all works. I have fleshed my own animals and sent them to Moyle and never got anything back looking like this. Before I make a phone call, I would like a opinion from those of you who are familiar with the process of fleshing and tanning hides.

Thanks!

What tannery?
Looks like a fall bear with the hair growing through the hide like that. That is not uncommon on early bears.
The bald spots are from either putrefaction or overshaving.
Frost dried should not have any effect on tanning.Frost dried skins normally tan up to a very soft stretchy leather.
if you shipped it to the tanner frozen it could have spoiled some in transit. That would not be the tanners fault.
Best to ship bears stretched and dried.

1.5 years in the freezer is a long time! And early shot bear are very easy to over scrape.

It was a fall bear but shot in October, 3 days before season closed.

I did ship it frozen in the spring (wasn't that warm) and only took 1 day to get to the tannery from when I dropped it off.

Didn't know the hair would grown through the hide like that.

Thanks for the information.

You shipped it frozen and it took one day to get to the tannery. What you/we don’t know is how long it sat at the tannery before they opened the box and did something with the hide. Might not have been right away. That might be part of the problem.

Not all tanneries accept frozen hides, in fact many of them don’t because they aren’t set up to deal with unfinished hides.

I doubt that a frozen bear hide Is going to go bad In a day or two. You can let frozen hides lay around for 3 or 4 days while thawing and they never go bad.
Freezer burn can cause problems but not so much with a un fleshed hide. I don't think your problem with that hide Is due to freezer burn.

It's a shame on how It turned out.

I agree, a frozen bear hide isn’t going to go bad in a day or two (or 3-4) of sitting around. If it sits around for a week or two, it will be a different story......

If that's the case then that's on the tannery.
The few bear hides I scraped for some hunters were salted before we sent them to the tannery. And they all turned out fine.

Bearhides are more prone to slippage from heat than any other pelt.
I have seen spring bearhides slip while still on the carcass after sitting in the sun for 4 hours.
Even when off the carcass they dont hold up well.Bears need to be processed promptly especially in spring if in the sun.The black fur and fatty skin really holds the heat.
Salted bearhides can also slip if not allowed to drain properly when salted, especially around the head.

Boco this was a fall killed bear. I still say the tannery screwed up that hide.

I knew it was a fall bear before he even said it.
