I banged a piece of rebar into the ground before doing some masonry work. Just checking elevations, and pulled the rebar out, and left the 3/8" hole in the ground.
Come back the next day, and the little 3/8" hole was completely dug up. Like ripped open to 2" & fully explored. Some animal did a complete investigation into the little rebar hole.
I'm thinking it was a coon, since we are inundated with coons. Possibly a Fox, as we have a few, but more likely a coon.

What animal would be so curious about a little rebar hole about 12" deep ??? Like a dirt hole set, with no lure, no bait... just a pencil hole in the ground.

Just a weekend trapper...

It's hard to say since it could be any or all of them in the area . If you really want to find out work up the dirt in front of where you pound in the stake to have a chance to see tracks .
Animals are like people each are different some are extremely curios and some not so much I'm guessing it could be a young of the year that's hungry and it's having to fend for itself now ?

Rebar holes were all a person needed to do for a dirt hole set back in the day. The holes seem to keep getting bigger the last years.

Animals are curious about those little mouse / chipmunk size holes.

predators are attracted to fresh dirt and new holes, coons included. Most creatures they eat live in holes of all sizes.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

Exactly, that’s why anything more is a waste of time and effort.

Some guys you talk to will say they'll have better luck on mouseholes on some years than standard dirtholes.
