That is the conclusion I've arrived at several years ago also and mostly use footholds now.

Here in Maine by using foothold traps you would have to check your traps every day.

Just caught my 3rd this year baited with raccoon scraps. I had some coyote lure in the box with it, to give it something really smelly to draw them in.

I'm pretty new, and had a camera on this cubby, and did have a few refusals to go alongside my few catches. More refusals when the box was up in a tree as opposed to on the ground.

I had one raid my bear trap which was baited with spoiled venison sausages that were accidentally left out of the freezer.

Fisher will come to almost any bait.
l like to at last start with fresh.
Beaver is good, muskrat is very appealing to most predators.
Chicken is very good. I have used quail quit a bit with good luck.
Deer scrapes etc. are good if legal to use game animals.

Back when we could use body grips on leaning trees or running poles several guys I know
including myself had great luck with beef suet. A large chunk of suet, beaver, muskrat or anything
will get birds to working your baits. Fisher hunt during the day a lot more
than many realize. Once you get a bunch of Chickadees, Blue Jays, Canadian Jays etc, working
the bait, in improves the sets immensely. Fisher hunt by sight quite a bit more than most think.

One tip I will share is as follows. When running a fairly long lines when I was young, I always carried
a couple of good food lures with me. Fruit type baits and lures might surprise you.

If you are checking sets and do not want to lug a chunk of bait every where
you hike, if you find a set that the bait is gone, you can make a passable set by burying a lured up stick in the
back of your box or cubby. Throw some duff on it like a mini trash pile set. Rebait the next trip through.

Like most of trapping, being where they are going to go is way to catch critters.

Bruce,Wis. law requires a daily check unless it is a lethal set capable of submerging the dead critter, then it is 4 days. There's no time limit on under ice sets. Basically all land sets are 24 hr. checks.
