Is this beaver roughly clean skinned good enough for future frost scraping? Should I scrap the back off a little more on the beam? i'm actually looking forward to -20 F, be careful what i wish for.

Thanks in advance!

Bob

Stretch it out tight, you can frost scrape that.It will be a little more scraping with that much saddle on if that is a big beaver.
LM and down it dont matter much, the saddles will scrape off those at 25c below with little effort if you have a good sharp scraper.

Thank you for the reply Boco.

I never tried much clean skinning so new ground for me. everything was going ok till i got to the back and started to get a bit frustrated and starting rushing. i figured worst case i could put it on the beam if i had too. this isnt that big of a beaver, so i would guess the saddle will come off OK. I'll take my time the next few

also this beaver, along with 2 others were caught in cross over/dam break set you have shown over the years. it's freezing early here so i put 2 - 330's on stands in front of the cross over and 1 at the bottom and had 3 beavers in one night. legally, we can't break/damage dams here, but the water running over the cross over seemed to do the trick. i'm going to set a few more like that. pretty cool seeing 3 beaver within 15' of each other......till they need to be packed out LOL.

Thank you again for all that you share on here, good luck this year!

Bob

I'm inside doing mine where it is warm. I froze enough when I was trapping them. I wouldn't trap an $8 beaver, so the rest wouldn't follow either. smile

Some of us dont hibernate because it gets a little cold.
Your just soft,Beav,I dont consider cold something to avoid. As a matter of fact cold is an asset and toughens you.
Nothing here stops because it gets cold,LOL.People go on about their everyday business even if its cold out.
Cold makes scraping beaver quicker and easier, and a superior finished product whether for sale or if you do your own tanning.

When you frost scrape, are you just scraping the hide clean, or are you actually thinning (shaving) the hide? Both?

Frost scraping is removing the saddle and fat on otter and wolves and medium and small beavers. Frost scraping on large beavers and bears you thin the leather a bit.
A large frost scraped beaver hide dried indoors at room temp dries in 24 hrs or less.Frees up all your boards.
