Spray painted 1x19 cable 3 to 4 weeks ago and can still smell a faint smell of the paint. I had to use a little more than I normally do because of the shine, ?

To ease my mind is there something you could suggest to make sure the odor is gone?

Hang them outside for a while if you haven't already and let them naturally air out. I spray paint most of mine and connect on coyotes 2-3 weeks after doing so. Biggest thing is to make sure your locks glide smoothly. I would be more worried with that than the paint smell.

In the future forget the painting. I find a quick 5 minutes or less boil with baking soda will remove excessive lubricant and shine, then a quick boil and soak in a light logwood crystal solution will provide a good twig/bark colouring look as in this picture, with the lower snare being the soda treatment versus the logwood soak. You could probably substitute walnut hulls or tree bark, etc for the colouring agent. Snares treated in this way are scent free, work just like untreated snares and generally blend in very well to the background bush, from the coyote’s point of view. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

When I remake a snare they get a light coat of flat black and hang outside all summer. After a catch I remove the hardware and remake them in the spring.

I've painted snares and set them the same day and caught coyotes in them that night. I wouldn't probably recommend it but in a pinch I'd do it again.

The original question "is there something you could suggest to make sure the odor is gone ?" --- if there is a faint paint odor, I will use either rubbing 90% or denatured alcohol and leave outside for a few days. These passive solvents evaporate quickly and will take some of the smell with them. The above methods for Next Year will all work but you want a quicker remedy. So get a pint bottle of either and submerge your snares in a flat container (doz. at a time if you have to). Lots of times I have used fresh red cedar bows in with snares/traps sealed in plastic container to overpower a lingering scent (cedar chips will also work just a little pricey for my money)................................ the mike

I started out treating my snares by boiling in water and baking soda, then letting them dull by hanging outside a month or so. I still do that to treat them initially for the oil but spray paint and use. I mix up my colors but usually prefer a light to dark brown just because of our "weed colors" here.

A few months ago, I saw an instructional video a snareman put out that showed how he dyed his snares naturally. He went to a woodyard and gathered up an old pillowcase full of wood chips. He then sank the pillowcase in a 5 gallon bucket of water and added his snares. After a few weeks, the water turned a dark black and the snares absorbed the color. I thought that was simple, as he didn't even boil the grease off but let the acid in the wood bark eat it off and naturally dye them.
