I use the iGoTrapping app on my iPhone, but it might not be the best option if you don’t have cell reception. It keep track of a lot more than location.

a pack of cloths pins
florescent spray paint
a note pad
sharpie marker
topo map print it off is fine google maps

spray the cloths pins florescent color

write numbers on them

when you get to a location write the number on the topo map and in the note pad make your sets , take notes what trap you laid , what set , you can even sketch a little drawing of the location clip the cloths pin to the branch above or near your set , use flagging tape and a stick if it is a field or a spare stake and the cloths pin or flagging tape.

in your note book write what set caught what what day

you can set and review those notes at night or in the off season and decide what caught and what didn't an not just be memory

it is interesting to go back to your notes

flagging tape is good but I hate seeing the woods full of it so clean up after yourself if you use it

the cloths pins are fast and re-usable target sells 50 for $1.79 https://www.target.com/p/50pk-clothespins-light-brown-room-essentials-8482/-/A-75662261

As far as snare sets go, we get a lot of snow and sometimes gang set a lot of snares. Pretty easy to flash a tree with your axe and write the number of snare on the flash with a magic marker. Trail sets in the snow can be hard to find but if you stick a trimmed willow along side of the trail within ten feet of your trap, it makes it easier to find. You can also spray paint with orange or red color a clothes pin and attach nearby on a willow or tree. Not as noticeable as survey tape. Or you can just take a youngster along whose brain is not addled yet by the travesties of life.

I flag all pipe dream sets they are almost invisible and when it snows they are invisible. I step off 2 large steps and plant a flag. I Am starting to think the flag is attractive to coyote and gives them something to focus on

Cloth pins work great. They match in and easy to find if you are looking for them and are less visible to trap thieves who are looking for survey tape.

I use a notebook and also many times place a long stem of a weed nearby which really helps me. Used the metal detector today, which is always a big help. I usually set two at each spot and that also seems to help

I've personally never understood how someone couldn't remember where they were. I trap some new ground every year and some of the same ol. I've never written them down or used GPS. Most of the time the animals caught help me find them. The most I've ever had out at once was 176. I know some people run more than that but I can say I can keep that many under wraps in my brain.

I might be the most paranoid person on earth when it comes to keeping track of trap locations. I keep a detailed notebook with notes on each set location. I mark trap locations in the OnX app. I also started using a backup mapping app on my phone. I mark all trap locations with my Garmin Oregon GPS too. It honestly does not take much time, about 5 seconds to mark each location on each device. On marten and fisher sets in thick woods with little competition i also use flagging tape on the road and at the set. Haven't lost one yet. I have a code that can save you 20% on OnX subscription, though you can use a lot of it for free. PM me for more info.

I mark locations sometimes after a snow its hard to pinpoint the exact spot.
If near a fence line where the whole line looks similar, a simple bread twist tie on the upper strand of wire and near the set helps. I do carry a roll of green flagging tape and use pieces if that too. Its not as visible as say orange or yellow but it works for me not the guy strolling through who isn't supposed to be there.
Sometimes a weedstem or stick planted 10' or so either side of the set make good subtle markers after a snow too. In snow I know the set is exactly between both markers and I can start brooming snow away from the set right away.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Take the time daily to log your set and new set locations, farm name or nick name them, how many sets and what type of sets. After a few days running in the same direction each day you should develop some muscle memory pretty quick.

I use large sturdy long weed stems or some sticks or logs etc to mark the back of each set. In the event of snow and winds your lochations can change significantly to where you can't see any detail what so ever. I drive a pilot hole down in the soil with a rebar and stick golden rod stems locally to mark the back of each set well out of the catch circle area.

They can be 3-4 ft in height. Saved my equipment loss many times over the years by doing this as I see a potential storm front coming in a few days bring snow.. I rarely use flagging tape except on water trapping sets at times. Attracts too much attention to the wrong folks many times.

I often forget where I put my glasses, but I seldom ever forgot where I set my traps.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I can lay in bed and recall every set and location, down to the sticks used to stabilize 330s, what rock I used as a drowner, etc.

I have one logging road that all looks the same though, and I use a bit of flagging tape. I make sure the tap is 30 yards after the trap, and on the opposite side of the trail.
