A question for you fisher trappers out there......

Do you have better luck with fresh or heavily tainted bait? We just went through a warm spell and all of my bait started to rot. It was more than just tainted. I rebaited everything with fresh meat (beaver) and the catch went down. I'm thinking now that maybe I should have just left the nasty bait in there.

So what do you all think? I had always heard that fresh bait was better but now I'm wondering if the scent of rotten stuff calls them in from farther away. This is my first year fisher trapping. I'm no expert.

I'm no expert either, but my rotten beaver meat worked on a marten and a fisher. I just keep freshening up my lure every check.

I'm doing the same. Thanks Kired.

Fisher and marten are opportunistic predator/scavengers that will eat virtually anything; berries, birds and eggs, fish and of coarse MEAT; fresh, tainted or rotting (carrion).

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Thanks bctomcat. In my region there isnt much of a mast crop this year and less natural food is available. I'm beginning to think that the loud smell of foul bait is attractive this year especially. I haven't had enough trap checks to say for sure. I may taint some bait and see what catches better.
