The last couple coyotes I skinned I did so while they were still warm and it seemed like every little cut around the head nicked a vein and there was quite a bit of blood. Some of this blood got on the fur.

I usually do a rough skin on any catches, fold it up, bag it up, and put it in the freezer. After season is when I get everything out, wash it, and flesh to tan myself as this is how I sell off my fur.

But I'm concerned that the blood getting on these coyotes could stain the lighter colored fur. Will a good thorough washing with soap and water after I unfreeze them clean them up? Or is there a method anyone recommends?

I realize I could just wash them out right after skinning, I just don't like the idea of having a soaking wet hide that then has to dry out before I can freeze it.

Thanks guys.

You can use borax to clean fur, especially with regard to dried blood stains. Previously I had always washed bloody hides before drying them. In this situation using borax I simply hand wash excessive blood clot areas, wiped the area as dry as possible with a rag then board the pelt as usual. Once the skin as dried and the fur turned out I work considerable dry borax powder into the stained areas, let set for 10-15 minutes and then comb, brush, and shake the borax out. Using this borax treatment method works extremely well as can be seen in the following before and after pictures. As well as removing blood stains the borax also cleans and brightens the fur.

Cold water will remove blood.Only wet the areas that have blood. If there is a lot of blood and the fur is very wet from the cold water roll the hide fur out in a large towell or two and wring it out hard.
Then the fur will just be damp, and you can board it fur in with no problems or freeze it.

i used BC's method last year. The borax and a good brush out made a big difference in the appearance of my coyotes. I did it after they were dried, and shortly before sale day. I did accidently pop the head off of one yote whole snapping the borax out of the fur. oops.

I use Oxi Magic It's a Clorox product with no bleach. Spray the bloody spots and wipe off with a paper towel. Works like MAGIC.

I have used hydrogen peroxide to clean blood out off furs.

It is more blessed to give than to receive

Yes sir. I use either one. But only have Borax before/after picture that I wanted to share. Both with good results.

Beav, a couple short years ago, you suggested using Woolite Advanced Stain Remover which has good results.
