Im curious if anyone still runs the black hole on 1.5 coilsprings for coon. Bigger coons just seem to avoid or not work dps like the smaller ones, and I have been thinking something like the black hole might do the trick. Does anyone still run them, and how were the catches with them?

They never worked well at all for anyone that I ever heard of. I know they didn't work for me.
If you really want to catch just the biggest coons and you've given up on the DP's, want to stay out of the water, you need to set some snares for the coons, since you live where there are big coons.
Set properly, you can neck snare nearly all your coons and at the same time avoid dinks, possums, skunks, and all that trash. You need fast loaded snares with aggressive non-relaxing locks and a solid support. You need the lock set to the side of the snare slightly below the top so it doesn't close when the dinks and trash run under it. You need to hang a 7" loop 6-8" off the walking surface of the trail. You'll miss a few big coons that may have their nose down and some will go over the top but if you set you're snare 6" from the bottom of the loop to the ground and you get your snare knocked down, raise it to 8" the next day. Its almost always a real big coon going over the snare or something like a fox or taller animal. If anything goes under your snare the loop should stay open and ride down their back until they pass, then fall right back into place for the big one that may be coming along. If you have a good solid support wire and a good tight support collar its easy. Locks that are not aggressive and non-relaxing will be sometimes worked back off the coons head by their dexterous feet, especially if you have a deer stop on the snare. Sorry to side track your post but I thought it was worth noting.

Never worked for me either. I bought some from mr. Rudy in 90s and never caught a single coon in them tried them hard for multiple seasons. Same year I bought those I also bought a dozen Duffer DPs from a guy at same nebraska convention. Caught a lot of coon in the Duffers and I am still using them 30 years later. I have tried so many different DPs over the years. Egg traps, duffers, coon cuffs, dukes, z traps, soup cans,, grizz, daggers, you name it. Caught coon in ALL of them except black holes. Threw all of my black holes away eventually, not a fan. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Honestly, duke i think hit a homer with their DP. I still set everything I own and there are places where one works better than the other for various reasons, but hands down the dukes seem to have the fewest pullouts, and most consistent catches. Jim
