If this post is out of bounds feel free to remove it. I'm posting this so maybe someone else doesn't make the same mistake.

I had something digging in my barn under a cattle chute, so I set a 110 on the hole, and baited the hole. In a couple of nights I caught a big barn rat. I reset the trap on the hole, however this time I set so that it closed from the sides instead of from the top and bottom. Today i found a skunk in the 110 that was not the humane kill i hope for. It had closed on the sides of the neck and it had to be dispatched with a gun. I will not set a body grip again that is not closing from the top and bottom. I hope that if someone else didnt know this they can learn from my mistake.

I would also retire the 110(or add another spring) and use a good strong 120.You may find some live animals like skunks alive in the 110 even with the dorso-ventral strike.
120's are easier to stabilize also.
Kudos to you for being concerned about the humane dispatch.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Personally I do not use single spring coni's on land except for muskrats.

The general rule is 120’s for dry sets and 110’s for water sets.

Live and learn.

Speaking of skunks and body grips, what is the ideal size and trigger pattern for skunks?

And on a % basis, how many cut loose in a body grip?

Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

I had a skunk in a 220 set right and caught in the middle that required a shot. I assumed it had just gotten caught. It didn't appear it would have lasted very long.

I like 160’s.

But have caught skunks in 110’s with no problem.
