The more of an issue you think it is the more the coyotes will think so too. Read what Lee posted again, I dye my traps cause well its a traditional day every year. Wax is more important than dye to keep gear in good condition. I have noticed some avoidance and scrathin around the trap at coon remakes tho, I'm thinkin' its more off a bacteria issue from their saliva than it is rust.
When coyotes first showed up here I was bedding shallow for fox, yotes were scratching at the trap. ounce I buried the trap deeper it went away.

It's been stated many times, you will never convince a coyote that you weren't there, go about your business in a calm manner . It's not you scent that needs controlled. But there are some coyotes that don't fit that mold.

Burying the traps deeper sounds like a good idea. I bought the traps used and gave them a good cleaning but didn’t wax them. A pair of coyotes walked right by the sets and didn’t seem interested in what I was trying to sell them. I guess it was a good thing that they weren’t completely spooked

From what you just posted it sounds more like an avoidance issue than a contamination problem. Make a set and leave it alone for a week, check from a distance and then see what happens. I will leave a set as long as it take to make a catch or until I am no longer driving by that set for regular check. I have left sets a month before a catch without even getting out of the Jeep when checking. A good set will last through anything mother nature throws at it for the most part. A lot , I mean a very lot, of snow or rain is the only thing that makes me stop and mess with a set. Some guys say deluxe after a week and others still say pull it and move. I say be patient, it you have track then you have coyote. Sooner or later you should connect.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Yep, need to be patient. Had a urine post set that I pulled and a couple days a coyote stepped right where a trap shoulda been and squirted on the corn stalk...

Tyt you didn’t say what bait or lure you are using and more importantly, how much ?

Using about a tea spoon of Forsyth predator bait and a little bit of Forsyth LDC or Minnesota red for lure. Cut down on the amount of lure I use after reading just a dab will do. Re baited and lured after 2 weeks

If they are walking by without breaking stride you are probably still using too much ! I don’t know the brand you are using but if it is strong or loud a BB size amount is all you need in mild temps and a pea size dollop in cold weather . Give them just enough to make them curious.

The only time I re lure is after a big rain ( 2 or 3” ) or a re make after the catch.
Good luck !

As just about everybody said, don’t worry about it. They will know you are there. Just make sure your trap is securely bedded.

Plain and simple, the coyote may have had a destination in mind, walk buys are way more common than most think. They get caught when there in the mood.

I don't feel a BB sized bait is enough. Anyone else agree?

The scent issue has plagued a lot of guys.

I have a friend, that in my opinion throws caution to the wind. When I say that, remember I am old and therefore grew up in the era when all books preached cleanliness as next to Godliness.

He wears the same boots for everything he does. He dips all his traps in fuel base cold dips. Buys cloth gloves out of a hardware store and puts them on to trap.
Note: Old school would have you wearing boots only on the line, dying and or waxing traps and cleaning gloves as though you were going to do surgery.

This year so far he and his partner have caught 50 coyotes, 70 red fox and a bunch of grey and cats.

I am not a big time trapper but hope to run some fairly decent lines before I croak. Watching him makes me think he may be on to something. LOL

I agree. I use about a tablespoon of bait, and a bb sized smear of lure. I want the coyote to have a good incentive to work to get the bait, there has to be enough carrot at the end of the stick to keep it interested. Lure on the other hand, less is more. It has to be just enough to make him curious and have to come in close to get a real good whiff.

Thanks for all the responses. Sheep’s wool was taken out of one of the dirt holes, hopefully whoever took it out comes back looking for more. Weather is mild here now and food is still easy.
