So far this season on a short trap line I've caught 5 coyotes, all females. After deer season my trap line will be extended quite a bit longer which, I would think, will catch some males and females. I was curious if anyone's had a time when either only males or only females were being caught.
What factors would there be that would catch only females or only males for a time? Or is this just a coincidence? No big deal cause I'll take what ever I get, but just curious what others may have to say.

Pa,
I caught 5 straight female coyotes this year then pulled for deer season gonna throw in some sets Sunday. I was told that means a lot of food in the Area and a heathy population. First time in 30 plus years trapping I ever have 5 straight of either sex usually closer to half and half

Up until yesterday I was running a 5:1 ratio of males to females.

I think it’s got more to do with luck of the draw than anything. How many pups were male or female in a given year, and which ones happen to come by your sets on those particular nights.

It’s like rolling dice. You’ll almost always get a mix, sometimes two or three of a kind. Then every so often you’ll roll a Yahtzee. Once in a great while two in a row. Watch how your line progresses and I bet you’ll see a bunch of males all at once.

There are reasons but your numbers aren't high enough to state very conclusively.

I've read that coyotes are density specific breeders. (Maybe Mr. June can chime in and explain more here). I'm wondering if coyotes have the ability during breeding season to "choose" to have more female pups in their litter to help increase their population density in low density areas? Just seems odd that I've caught 5 females so far when last season I only caught 1 male on this farm. Maybe it is just a coincidence but it's interesting stuff to ponder.

I've been lucky. All my Fox catches have been males. Also lucky that all my nuisance raccoons have been female.

Just a weekend trapper...

this has changed for me over time. but just generally speaking in the last decade, something like 70-80% of my early catch will be males. the females i catch tend to be pups and concentrated in close proximity. the males tend to be adults. for me its a function of dispersal, sorta how you are set up and some luck of encounter. i tend to concentrate on specific corridors rather than a spot. 20-25 years ago i always said the coyotes moved when the beans and corn came off. thats still huge factor but i see them moving less these days with just the crop change while being impacted also by human activity. and maybe its just me trapping differently, slowing down and observing more things or there being so few coyotes now compared to years past due to pretty widespread disease but these days i notice family units moving together and not really seperating/covering big ground until december. so if i happen to be in the same spot with the family unit or right when it moves together in november i'm likely to see concentration of females but for the most part prior to december its single males that are on the move at least for me.
