Could not find an answer to this in the archives, or anywhere for that matter.

Got some new beaver traps in. Haven't used double long springs much (other than #11s), and so I got 1 #5 Bridger DLS, just to give it a try for beaver. I generally don't like single posted pans, and because it seems to be so highly recommended, I got a PIT pan for it. Trouble is, I'm not sure how to get it on there.

I know the large tabs on the side need to be bent around the cross frame, but there's a small tab in the middle that looks like it should go through the hole in the cross frame where the current pan post is. Is that correct? If so, how the heck do you get that pan post out of the cross frame???

This is what needs to be installed. Note the small tab.

This is where it needs to be installed. Note the pan post here, which is blocking the hole that I expect that tab needs to go through. Tried to get it off, but can't seem to budge it.

You need to place the post over a hole in a 2x4 and hit it with a hammer from above and drive it out of the trap frame. It takes a good whack and a little bit of work.

Ok. I gave it a few good whacks and only peened over the top of the piece (as you can see in the picture above). I'll set up a board with a hole in it and give it another go. Just started to get concerned about screwing up a brand new trap due to ignorance.

Got it out! Board trick helped out. Just had to hit it harder than I liked. Not that I'll be using that piece again, but I certainly took no pleasure in getting that thing out. I like to keep parts that may come in handy in the future..

But she looks great! And fires like a dream too! Easy to set, nice pan tension and clean break.

Thanks for your help thedude055. I was really stressing hard about getting that pan post out. My wife actually bought that trap for me as an early Christmas gift after all! What would I have done if I'd screwed it up?!

Those #5 doubles with pits are my Beaver traps of choice. Solid good working trap.
