What do you use to secure footholds to trapping stakes when setting houses or feed beds? Regardless of PVC, Bamboo or firing strips, I’m looking for another option in lieu of wire to connect traps, I trap some deeper water and if I utilize the trap ring, I’m retrieving my catch from Davy Jones Locker. Wire is hard on gauntlets and a twisted mess for organization. I was thinking of making some short cinch cable loops but I wanted feedback first.

Use cable with a slip noose on one end and a fixed lop on the other end. Run you cable through the trap ring and put the slip noose end through the fixed loop. Now your trap Is secure to the cable. Then just place the slip noose around your stake. Make It long enough so you can keep the slip noose above the water line. No more glove issues.

Drill a hole through the stake and put a cable through it a crimp it on in a ring with a double ferrule and use a sleep easy snap hooks. You could also use a section of twin loop screwed to the stake also. Then you can connect and remove your trap from the stake.

This should work well for me, I can attach it to any stake or use it with my Sudden Valley Clips.

That will work but I don't attach the cable permanently to the trap ring. I just pass the cable through the ring then pass the cable through the fixed loop. That way you can remove the cable from the trap without cutting It off.

Now you got It. But If I were you Id make that cable about 12" long. That will give you a bit more wiggle room. And you can keep the loop on the stake out of the water and still drown the rat.

I have used the cables on my rat traps for over 15 years. Mine a big longer then those pictured here and I attach mine to the trap chain with the large O rings as I take several off when I pushup trap through the ice. I don't want all that extra chain length then. With the sliding cable loop you can position the cable on the stake to work with the depth you have say 1, 2 or 4 feet. I use 7 foot bamboo stakes. a lot of places where houses are there is 3 foot of water and 2 foot of ooze so the extra length is nice. No wire, no chain, quick setting and pulling.

I'm running all Blake & Lambs and they have extra length chain so I've got the length and plenty of wiggle room.

I use 5-8' long scrap slats that i get from amish sawmill for free. In my area rarely does a stake go more than 18-24" into bottom. I put a nail into all stakes at about 24" or so ahead of time & am ready to slide trap ring over stake when in the marsh. Saves time & works for me

The nice thing about the slip nooses Is you can cinch them off above the water line. Then you aren't trying to hook that trap that's on the bottom. And In most cases you don't even need gloves.

That is what I do, cinch them above the water. I do wear elbow length glovers, but during open water I almost never wear long gloves. I don't find it necessary and why wear out a $20-$40 pair when I can wear out a pair that are roughly two pair for $8.

Eagleye, what do you have on the slip end, besides a double ferrule and a stop?

I place a nut before the ferrule and stop- I do this on my drowning slides for beavers and it allows me to cinch tight without the loop relaxing.
