So in these crappy prices I figured I try fleshing and boarding. Went pretty decent on first two. They been drying about 2.5 days at 60 degrees. My question is the tails look like the first day yet. I did scrape them, but I guess should have did more? Is this common for them to be last to dry? I had hardware cloth over them as many do. Just took it off thinking it would get more air. Any insight?

Your tails need more fleshing, The white spot areas on the butt and tail is excessive fat that should be removed for proper pelt drying.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

With my Necker 600 I can get about 95% of the tail fleshed with the dull edge. Sometimes I use light, short strokes to clean the tails up. You need to get that fat film off the tail or it won't dry fast or at all.

Don't worry about it the buyer Isn't to concerned about the tail. But they do need a bit more elbow grease to make them right.

Put the tail over the end of your beam and "fillet" off that fat with a sharp knife.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I use a fillet knife as soon as I put them on the beam. I fillet right up the center and then to the sides. Very fast if your knife is sharp.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.
