If your wax catches on fire for a few minutes, do you reuse it or throw it away?

If it smells burnt do not use it for your traps

As mousey said burnt smelling wax isn't going to help you on your K-9 line. Wax is expensive, the best way I've used is the double boiler method of heating your wax. There is zero chance of scorching or burning your wax with that method. Gary

set it aside for water traps, and start over with fresh wax for dry land traps.
