While bear baiting this fall for the first time. I discovered that grey fox have real sweet tooth for donuts, etc. They were around the bait almost every night. So recently I baited a couple of sets with left over sweets and bagged the first grey fox this morning. I have other sets out with commercial attractants very close to the sets with just sweets. The fox have no interest in the sets with the commercial attractants. But the sweets are a different story. I'm kind of a novice, but has anyone else discovered this?

... good deal ... gray fox are about like a coon when it comes to what they’ll eat

... bobcat gland lure works wonders on them as well

They seem to have a more vegetarian diet compared to other canids. Not to say they dont eat meat but they do eat a lot more fruits and berries than the others. Think the first grey I ever caught was off a bait I made that was a molasses/honey/syup concoction with some groundhog chucks marinated in it. Then the next one was powdered donuts.

In AZ years ago I caught many greys with just artificial peppermint flavoring and urine.

A friend claimed that he used plain white bread, rolled in to small balls as bait for cage traps set for greys. This was in grape vineyards, where the greys were gorging on grapes. I never actually saw him do this, and was always unsure if he was pulling my leg. Something he would do on occasion. There were no greys on my trapline, so never got to try it myself.
