Hey guys,
Is it ok to hang a fox for a day if it’s cold outside ? Or do I still risk green belly? I’d rather do it tomorrow after work as opposed to tonight. It’s in the mid 20’s tonight and a high of 30° tomorrow.

They peel easier fresh but it won't hurt to wait a day. Still might see a little green even with those temps.

Wish I had more time to trap....

As I've posted many times, green belly is often over stressed by many. Although green belly can be serious it is common on a lot of fur animals. It is not a serious defect until it turns really dark brown or black, then you will start to see some slippage of fur. I often have coyotes hanging for 2-3 days (even 5) in the shop at 40 - 60 degree F temperature with no problem. The initially frozen coyote in this picture was hung face down for 5 days and was perfectly fine re fur slippage. If you’re worried about it, wiping the area with vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide solution will kill the bacteria causing the rot.

Thanks guys. I’m way too tired to do it tonight. It’ll have to be fine. I’ll see tomorrow.

It'll be fine.We hang canines and cats by a back leg. They skin better after hanging a day or two so long as its cool and out of the sun.In a woodshed is good.
Beaver-lay on an old piece of carpet for a day or two until the fur drys-they skin a lot better too.
While the skin peels easier when fresh the blood has not coagulated and the fat stays with the skin.
When you cool an animal for a couple days the skin will be cleaner(no blood) and most of the fat will stay with the carcass not on the hide. And the fleas will leave a cool carcass.

Boco, you say they skin better? My experience has always been a cold coyote is twice as tough to skin as a warm one, if you know something that makes cold coyotes easier I’d love to hear it

I didnt state that the hide comes off easier-I said they skin better.I just wrote why. They are harder to pull than a fresh one-but "skin better"-blood is coagulated, fat is like butter and can be easily left on the carcass, and the fleas will vacate the cold carcass.
We always hang fall caught fur for a couple days(dont hang beaver-it makes them bleed more)
Winter caught fur is frozen solid,so it only takes a day to thaw(hang) the small ones and 3 days to thaw a wolf.
Guys that did the speed skinning competitions at the convention would hang the thawed frozen carcass in front of a heater until all the rigor was gone and it was like a fresh animal-skinned real fast but a mess.
