this will be my first time for coyotes so I need a lot of help. I hear coyotes every night for the last 30yrs, they have been as close as 50 ft from my house. we have one large dog that we bring at night in the cold weather. I want to buy a couple of high quality traps to try, but my dilemma is that I would have to set them off/remove them every morning before I let the dog out. I am open to all suggestions.

thanks for helping

In my country it’s not very hard to get permission to trap coyotes. Ask about the ground that’s close but far enough away to not catch your own dog .

In my opinion tripping and resetting every day will only catch the dumbest of the lot .

Rather than resetting the trap every day, I would either walk the dog on a leash or put a board over the trap during the day time.

There is a lot of knowledge in posts on the forum about what sets, what traps to use and how to prepare them.

I’m not a big fan of just saying check the archives, but do check them. I have read and reread many threads in there.

For starters I would check the vendors that pop up on the forum (Minnesota trap line products, F&T, etc.) for a coyote starter kit. It will have everything you need.

Then make some dirt holes, bed your traps in front of them as solid as you can, and you’re off to a good start. Often times, the first one is the hardest and it gets easier from there.

Yup I’d just cut some 8”x8” pieces of plywood and cover the set during the day, then pick em back up when you put the dog back in. Either that or try to set far enough away from the place that the dog won’t wander that far. Resetting every night is way too much of a pain and you’ll end up spooking coyotes with that much activity at the set

My advice would be to chain up the dog.

Find a couple of old disc blades to cover your traps, learn to make blind sets in trails, pinch points, etc... no lure or urine directly at sets near your house to cut down on non-target catches.

Blind sets are a lost art, but are still deadly.

Snares are a great option also, and easy to inactivate.

Use roofing shingles. The gravel-covered kind that have half slots that allows you to break into 3 equal squares. Use them to cover your sets. Works well to cover a traps b4 a heavy rain, too.

Great idea man, I’m gonna use that for the rains. I happen to have a pack sitting that I was gonna use for exposed bobcat sets

1 Learn how make a good step down dirt hole
2 learn how to bed your trap so you can touch it anywhere without it moving
3 the more traps you set the better your odds
4 the more you mess with your sets the lower your odds

Six quality sets are better than 60 hail-Mary sets.

Put your dog on a chain in the yard. Dog problem solved.

Look into using the pipe dream set. The YouTube videos and the Tman archive descriptions are excellent. Or use dirt hole or flat sets. Whatever you use, get the trap1/2 inch below grade, tap the dirt on the side of the trap jaws to firmly hold the trap in place. Use a trapper’s cap to help pack dirt in the jaws or some sort of poly or fiberfill pad under the pan, then add your cover over the trap.

I use just 2 set types for all my canine trapping: dirt hole or pipe dream sets with the traps set and covered with grass like you do for pipe dream sets. This way I don’t have to mess with dirt over the trap, anything under the pan, or blending dirt to look natural.

Since going to this trap arrangement, my catch has improved and weather doesn’t mess me over.

Get an Electronic caller and just shoot them. Challenge bark, kitten or pup in distress work very well. Sometimes the trap just doesn't get it done. That's when I grab the rifle. Dead Yote, happy pooch.
