Stay away from them the best you can. Can’t avoid them without avoiding coyotes. Use traps that are easy on their feet uncase you catch one

I don't live in an urban area but my .02 is to not set traps where pets are expected to be and roll with it. Not on the edge of public space for example, but if you are 100' inside private property then you should be OK

Out in the country if I catch a wandering dog and he will let me get the trap off then he gets let go, otherwise have to figure out who the owner is, have them come get it and reiterate why they should keep their pets from roaming and let them know I am subject to have traps out year round

Dogs in my area (farm dogs) are not a prob. Cats on the other hand like my canine sets. Most all of them have been good tempered. They let me un hook them and I pick them up and pet them while they lick their paw then send them home. Call me a softie, but I don't want to kill some kids pet. But if it is a snarling furball, all bets are off.

I don't have many problems with dogs where I trap but heard some guys (may have been JC Conner) will make a couple of decent sized dirt holes, say 20 feet apart or so, and bait one and leave one unbaited. No trap in front of the baited one and a trap set in front of the unbaited one. Idea is that dogs typically will be drawn to and check out the one that's baited only and leave the unbaited one unvisited. Coyotes being curious and having the need to find food to survive will check both dirt holes out. I'd think it would work for other unwanted critters too - coons, possums, etc. Might be worth a try - you could make a couple this way with no trap on either hole and use a game camera to see what happens

IF you trap long enough you WILL catch some dogs!!! I have been in the middle of a 35000 acre tract of land in South Alabama and not a House for 10 miles and caught a dog. Land manager said = O that's old so and so dog. Black lab. Turn him loose and someone came and got him the next day. Wild dogs are another story. Or to be correct. Dogs dumped on old 1 way end hunting club roads miles from anywhere

Get a catch pole and get used to using it. Not fun for anyone but it is what it is. I’ve let a fair number go out in the middle of nowhere. German shepherd, Rottweiler, and fluffy. The worst I ever had was a male German shorthair. Any proper set for a coyote will catch a dog, at least once. They wise up fast.
