The other day I caught a young female wolf in a 1/16th 10" fox/lynx snare set 8-10" off the ground. Has anyone ever had a similar experience? I'm still amazed by it all.

Good for you! I agree that her nose must have been down to the ground or something. Last year I caught one in (wolf snare) a snare set about 10 inches off the ground. The particular trail went under some low hanging spruce branches and caused him to duck. Is the set snare in the first picture the one that she was caught in? It doesn't seem so.

That's just a picture of a similar snare. We were in the midst of a snow storm so I guess she was running with her head down. She was caught right behind the ears, the snare was so tight I had a hard time getting it off.

I've caught badgers in a coyote snare after a Chinook blew off a lot of snow it literally had to jump into the loop to get the loop behind its ears ha ha .

A friend who is a snare customer of mine checked his coyote snare line & a snare was gone he walked back to get another snare to replace it then he noticed the stake was gone also , long story short he some how foot snared a yearling black bear who popped the BAD this was 2 weeks ago he was glad it got away !
Very nice wolf catch keep up the good work !
Allan

I bet that snare was tight and well placed! Maybe you will pick up another if they come back through.

Well, sorta.

I had my 70 lb black lab with me running a few snares. Off leash. As we approached a brush patch I had him at tight heel but he started getting real birdy and tore off toward a 7" cat snare. He was air trailing hot hare scent. At full speed, full speed, I watched as he approached that little snare and raised his nose just enough to center the loop, running all out. When he hit the end of the short tie-off all 4 feet went straight up in the air and landed flat on his back. He knew he'd screwed up and gave me the typical shame dog look mixed with confusion how I'd managed to stop him is what I think he was wondering. Anyways that was insightful. I ended up picking up a couple cats in that set too.

I think I remember seeing an article about a moose being caught by the nose and killed in a coyote snare in Nova Scotia

The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

There is a guy from our trapping council who is well known for snaring a lot of wolves.
He sets all his wolf snares 6 inches off the ground.
He claims wolves run with their heads low in the heavy bush when scent trailing a big bait.
Hard to argue with his success.

On another note a neighbor of mine had a bunch of beaver snarepoles stored behind his outhouse with the snares still attached to the poles.Just randomly stood up there.
One morning he went out and there was a dead wolf wrapped up in the beaver snares.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Snare around the nose is almost always a death sentence
