Merry Christmas T’man members! I don’t get online near as much anymore as I quit my desk job several years ago. Kids are grown and gone and I’m now hoping for retirement in a few years. Been working hard on my trapline and now have a 100 miles consisting of several loops, safety cabins and a nice mixed bag of pockets of fur. Finally learned the pattern of my wolves, found my marten areas and occasionally get to play with wolverine.
This one happen to come thru a section of line I call wolf kill lake. It’s a large lake the wolves seem to take down a moose yearly. The wolverine came onto my trail a little over a mile before the lake about 3 weeks ago. I’ve been catching some nice marten lately in the area but after seeing his tracks, I decided to shut the marten traps down until he moved on or I caught him. Usually when I have wolverine come thru it’s only once and it’s usually after season closes in late Feb. so when I seen his tracks I didn’t get too excited, in fact I didn’t even set for him. But a week later when he again came onto my trail at the exact same spot, traveled the mile, and then dove off in the exact same spot, I knew he was staying in the area and I had to act quick. We have a lot of caribou in the area currently and assumed the wolves had a kill close that was keeping him around. I usually catch wolverine in bucket sets with success so that was my go to plan. I sprinkled 8-10 bucket sets along his route, along with some snares from the advice of Takotna. He mentioned that I should set some different types of sets to change things up in case he was a smart wolverine or if I ended up educating him on a bucket set. I had a #9 on a big log drag that I stash on this lake for the wolves so I took a skinned caribou head and tied it about a foot and half up a tree trunk and set the #9 about the same distance away from the tree. As a cubby cat guy I couldn’t resist putting a few light guide twigs but kept it light, making the set more messy then anything. Now one thing I always use on my bucket sets is lure. I use Paul’s Skunky
Backbreaker on all my marten, cat and wolverine sets. Takotna tells me “no skunk” lure. As bad as I wanted to apply some to this set, I took his advice. He’s caught more wolverine then I ever will. The very next week, as I pass bucket after bucket I start to get that discouraged feeling. The #9 was my second to the last set that I made for him. After crossing a sketchy creek, I turn around to make sure my wife crossed ok and when I turned back and made a slight bend in the trail I could see ahead that I had a big dark wolverine in the #9! We had a fresh snow the night before so it was a beautiful site with him bouncing around. Like a wolf, you never know how well they are caught so I grabbed my pistol and slowly walked up to him. As I got closer I could see he well committed to the #9 and was caught extremely good. Man, those things are diggers. That’s all he wanted to do is go around the tree, dig hard at the ground and at times shove his head down where he was digging. Ended up being a gorgeous dark 33# male. Hope you enjoyed the story, if I ever figure out how to post pics again I’ll start posting a little more. Having a record breaking year so far on marten, mink, otter and now wolverine. Must be the year of the weasel..
