In a pinch, will table salt work? A hard cold snap is coming and I'm out of antifreeze. And with the holidays shipping is out.

Yes it works. But they will rust up an unwaxed trap pretty good.
I even sprinkle it around and down a dirthole

They are waxed pretty good but will probably get dipped before I put them away.

Just give any traps that made a catch in a salted set a through cleaning when they get back to the shed. Or they will rust up bad

I have used table salt without issue really in a pinch. Each method has a plus and minus i suppose. Rusting is the downside of table salt. There is a video with payne and Masterson called High Plains Coyote or something along those lines and that is the method they use throughout the filming of that.

I use driveway salt. A little does a lot. Doesn't clump up if it gets damp.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Not to get of the salt topic. But compass sets are what I use on alot of my remakes. Works pretty good for me with that

That's what I like about the potassium AF vs. sodium (table salt). Not so hard on the traps. I'm doing some research into the Corn based liquid AF they use on bridges before snow and ice storms. It is non corrosive and has a long hang time. The State will spray bridge decks 2 or 3 days before a storm comes. If it is odor-free, it might be the way to go.

I used to work for the DOT here in Kansas, I’ve never heard of a corn based anti-ice, but in several locations here they are adding beet juice to the salt brine for bridges. Most of the liquid deicer here is just a salt brine made on-site with rock salt and sprayed from a boom truck.

Zion, up in MN the corn growers assn. worked with the Ethanol plants and came up with what looks like a thin corn syrup. The MSP airport use it on runways. The MN DOT uses it on the bridge decks because it is non corrosive to the re-bar. To prob is the cost.

While I use waxed sand/dirt like many here, I find it isn't the total answer in my opinion.
I have gone to using an ice melter product purchased at Farm & Fleet.
Some goes under the trap before bedding. Some goes around the jaw edges/springs after bedding. Waxed sand fills in the void inside the jaws. Traps bed solid, and they always snap closed when triggered.

Thanks for posting that. Along with waxed sand, when things get real cold, I'll add calcium chloride. How does that ice melter compare?

Thanks for the information. It would be great if they could come up with an affordable low or no salt alternative. Salt works well but is rough on vehicles and bridges.

I've never had a freeze up using the melter. It will still eventually rust the trap. Single digits here the morning, I'm confident all traps are in working order.

Gray,
I don't see any refusals due to using the melter product.

Mine are buried in 10" of ice and snow. Good thing I marked them with pink surveyors tape on the tree branches and giant ragweed. I think it would take a truckload to free my sets.
