I’m looking at the 18’ alumacraft waterfowler as a new duck and trapping boat. Just wondering if anyone on here has one and use it in areas with rough water. We are wide open in the Atlantic here and need a good sea boat. They look good and have the width. Any thoughts?

I don’t have an alumacraft but I do have an 18 foot G3. It is very stable because of the width but being a flat bottom except for a slight modified v-hull it will beat you to death. Looks really similar to my boat and I can’t go at any speed if it is rough at all. Awesome for shallow rivers or calm water.

If you are trapping out of it, that means you are going to shore. I do not know what you consider rough, but that would be far from my first choice in two foot breakers at shore. When you hit shore it will fill that thing up if it is rough. Once it is full of water and you are sitting getting pounded by every wave, you are done in that. Calm water it would be great.

I had a 1860 Alumscraft, with a 75 hp yamaha, for 22 years. It now belongs to my son. I could not even tell you, how many varmints have been in that boat. It has hauled deer, furbearers, feesh, waterfowl, etc. it is a modified v, with a side console. It rides rough on rough water. A mod v is not very forgiving in anything more than choppy water.
Be sure to check warranty for salt water use!

I did a North Atlantic “cruise” to Nova Scotia and we had waves coming over an aircraft carrier...don’t think that boat is big enough.

I fished Ky. lake for awhile in a 18ft comm. jon boat. Empty it was ok, but rough. Loaded with nets and/or fish there were several times I wished I had a bigger boat. I wouldn't wanna be on the Atlantic ocean in one.

Ok thank you everyone.
With the way things are right now there are none to look at in person in the province so it makes it hard to order something when you don’t know what you are getting.
I switched my focus to a g3 outfitter 17’7 V hull.
I do lots of boating here now in a 16’ smokercraft but you need to pick your days. I want to be comfortable in a 2 m sea and not just touch and go.

If it were me I would get a 17-18 foot inflatable. They will float when full of water. Three of us launched off a sand beach, into 20-22 foot seas. We had 3" of water running over the transom, but we were running and draining. It had a 3" elephant bailer and by the time we got 3/4s of a mile out to the ship it was dry. The more time you spend in an inflatable the more you figure out they are made to float. They are not a speed boat though. But I had days were we did 50-60 miles in one. 25-30 miles running traps.
