"The cause remains under investigation." Power plant coal piles are always trying to burn. It's the nature of coal to spontaneously combust and it must be properly packed to exclude oxygen to keep it from burning.

The conspiracy theories are not likely the cause. Like I said, it is the nature of coal. All coal plants fight this issue all the time. The people that work the coal pile have to keep up with it and keep the coal properly packed. When they see smoke they have to take action and not let it get away from them. Western coal, Powder River Basin coal, is worse than eastern coal. Fires on the conveyors carrying coal to the pulverisers is a common problem in plants that use Powder River Basin coal. The question is "Why did the coal pile workers let it get away from them?"

Does coal only want to self combust when its piled? Dosen't seem to be an issue when its transported. I have lived near the main Union Pacific railroad lines all my life, and huge coal trains roll through daily. Have never seen or heard of one catching fire.

Kind of like school shootings never had them until the dems wanted stricter gun laws

Video said it was a coal bunker fire. I’m an operator in a coal fired power plant. Bunker fires are very common as EdP stated western coal is worse. When units are taken offline for periods of time the bunkers are usually dumped for this reason. Fires in the coal piles are an everyday occurrence. My guess would be that the particular unit was offline. If it were running, the coal that was burning in the bunker most likely could’ve been run down into the pulverizer with no problems. Most times here our fuel supply operators flood water into the bunkers as we continue to run it down the bunkers into the coal mills.

My plant caught fire back on 2015 when a generator went from 3600 rpm to zero in 43 seconds.

I've seen plenty of coal trucks going down the road with the load smoking, but like trapdog1 I don't remember ever seeing a railcar smoking. Don't know why that is.
