This is a tanned bobcat pelt that I received as part of a group of pelts I recently purchased. The leather is stained and stiff in the stained areas.

What caused that?

Note - I have a good idea what caused the problem. Just looking for other opinions. Thanks

Not properly prepared, degreased? The oil in the skin wouldn't let the tanning solution absorb? Yes , those are questions to a question. Just my guess...

Wish I had more time to trap....

Freezer burn is also my guess.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

That is classic grease burnt.

Not sure but I've caught and put up a lot of bobcats and they don't have much In the way of fat on them.
Has that stain had any effect on the leather or the fur?

Thats the problem. Some people will rush the fleshing because they don't look like they got fat on them. Down here in southern nevada we get some cats that looked fleshed after you skin them, but if you take your time with the sharpened end of a necker 600, you get a pretty good clump of fat/membrane/meat off of it. So my guess is it was speed fleshed or freezer burned.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

Hi Nancy. Sure looks like a stale greasy cat. I have noticed cats hold over well if really fleshed good. If a little
Fat is left after a couple years hanging that is what happens. IMHO. They don’t rehydrate well either for sewing.
