Like to hear some opinions on human scent trapping Canines.

Ive put a lot of test sets in without traps and some in with nonfunctioning traps. Three things I'll share
1 its not usually about just one thing its usually about several caution flags coyotes encounter at the set. And I believe there's things that can make coyotes curious but still cautious.

2 coyotes can have a wide range of caution from one animal to another and hunger can play a role in their boldness

3 there are a lot of unproven theories passed around so much that they almost become fact. Ideas that we think make sense to us in our own mind but when actually tested maybe don't pan out to the extent we thought

I think if a person really wants to know you have to test it

I'll give you one example to think on.... if u had a fresh snow over night and u woke up and found human tracks walking down the side walk would it cause suspicion? If you saw human tracks walking around your house and stopping at each window would it cause suspicion? So do human tracks in snow cause suspicion for u?

Watched a show were they put a hundred dollar bill on a busy sidewalk WITH a circle around it in chalk. Lots and lots of people walked by it without picking it up. A hundred dollar bill or a cicle by itself won't cause much caution.

Most trappers over think things re coyote and wolf trapping and spend too much time constructing sets leaving a concentration of scent and disturbance. Most of the scent left will be from your body. Coyotes and wolves are very familiar with human scent, wire, cable, and chain debris in the bush from logging etc. Just have confidence, get in, set and get out as quickly as possible and you will have little problem.

Super clean is a waste of time. Dirty traps in the ground will pay. You can take a rusty trap out and catch a coyote in it as easily as a beautiful dyed and waxed or dipped trap. Key thing is to keep food or lure smells off of traps. Waxing is to make traps last many more years.

Do not walk around or make set and turn around and go back. Either follow thru on the trail or cross over and depart the area in a different location than your entry point. Smoothing out your tracks is just another activity that peaks their attention.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

We catch coyotes year round here. We have maybe 3-4 months where you won’t be dripping sweat making sets. Completely impossible to remain scent free. I just try not to drip on the trap itself.

Best answer yet!! I take a few precautions setting my yote traps but I do not go to great pains like some do.

The problem in a low density and very high pressure calling and hound hunting year round and trappers as well. The yotes around my area will turn inside out over a tire track in the snow. That's the older ones, YOY their not to difficult to catch.
As YesSir said, test test and practice making sets in the off season until you can make faster sets to leave less you behind
And I'm one of those scent control freaks these guys take about

I will say I'm not a big #s trapper though I'd like to give it try in the future. I really like the challenge coyotes represent. I have really gotten into making baits and lure, also testing individual ingredients. Personally I'd rather have 15 coyotes walk by my set and catch 15 (though perfection is impossible) than have 30 walk by and catch 20. Ive rode with someone that catches big #s of coyotes and even those guys get dug traps and animals that won't work the set. Those guys don't worry about it and just roll on. For me if I could figure how to catch a few more of those by figuring out a piece of the puzzle thats what motivates me. Human scent does play a factor i believe but I don't go to the extremes either because they will know for awhile you were there. I do believe as others stated get in and out fast lowers the caution flag some.

Yes sir, good info. I've also got a lot of info from Bernie Barringer's book Farmland Fur Trapping. Yotes are insanely adaptive. Dumpster divers by night, then head for the woods to sleep it off. When the bombs drop, it will be cockroaches, yotes and Keith Richards left.
