Heyooo guys, so I've caught 16 muskrats yet and no mink. I've tried a few types of water sets, but haven't connected on a mink yet. I would really like to get at least one this season. Any good set ideas for mink? I think it's pretty late in the year to try pockets, as the ground is pretty frozen. Should I give mink boxes a try? If so, whats a good box design and trigger orientation? All ideas, comments and help are appreciated!

Do you have mink to catch? Maybe try some bottom edge sets.

Bottom edge sets, pocket sets and blind trail sets.
If there is open water, you can make a pocket set.

Look on the Wilderness forum some of the marten boxes designs. Or even a 2 gallon flower pot will do.
Cover it up with grass and only have a little hole to get into the front 1/2 "size, make them work for it to the bait in the back.
Wire up a muskrat body in the pot so they cant get it out. The drain holes are enough for ventilation.

Bottom edge sets work great when the weather gets nasty and the water freezes over!

Make cubbies or boxes to look like a cubby where the mink run, like at the corners of culverts, beaver dams, beaver houses etc.
Look for dry crossovers thru grass at old beaver dams or oxbows.Check under overhanging banks to see if mink are running there. If open water for drowning, use a foothold on a drowner,if no water to drown wax your 120's.
In winter use about a quarter of a beaver inside the cubby on the tree backing and block all the sides and top with evergreens.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

They avoid my conibears in wood cubbies here and I have better luck with foothold on a slide wire if you can find any fast flowing water, i also pick up a couple mink inside of muskrat lodges so you could try that if its legal there

Put your foothold exactly where you see mink tracks ,with enough wire so they can reach deep enough water to drown.

if you cant dig/bait a pocket, try cubbies along the waters edge. rocks or whatevers already there naturally. if rocks, be sure the back and sides are tight so they cant enter somewhere besides the front. trap in the entrance just below the waters surface.

Blind set under about 2 inches of water or less where mink will run up against a concrete box culvert wall going under a roadway

Wait until you have 10 dollar rats and they won’t take mink then you’ll catch every mink in the area.

A great set I've found is a small creek that's frozen over chop 3 holes in a row about two feet apart. Set a conibear type trap in the middle hole if two fit side by side use 2 but cover the hole with ice chunks removed from the 3 holes leave the one above and below open and any mink traveling seems to have to check out the under side of the ice and go through the set. As long as the water is moving and its above 0 degrees farenheit it will work overnight. Check in the afternoon to improve the odds its un frozen when the mink comes by. But they do move during the day so as long its reopened daily you will catch every mink that passes down that stretch of creek.

Just a change up I do when it's slow and I am running a short line as it is a bit time consuming but will produce.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Bottom edge sets or pocket sets baited with a chunk of muskrat meat.

Good luck! I hope you get one...or two!!!!!

Pocket sets in moving water. If ya can't dig it them make rock cubbies. Placing a few rocks attempting to make the current go into the pocket. helps in cold conditions plus it will help create a scent trail

Find Eric Space's posts- I think I got the name right. He has some great how too posts and they are even numbered if I remember right.

I've never trapped a place that had a lot of them but the ones I have caught I was setting for rats. Go catch 16 more and if you don't have a mink yet do it again. It will be fun!
