I plan on making a skinning trough and am not sure if I should build it for sitting or standing. I have always stood while skinning beaver on a table but am wondering if anyone sits while skinning and how they like it.

Don’t forget to put it on a lazy Susan swivel. I like mine to swivel as well. I set on a tall stool to skin mostly.

Built one of each. Have not regretted either one. Like dads idea of the knives holder.

Thanks everyone, I think I will build two. One like in Mr. Dobbins’ book, and one like bctomcat’s mounted on a swivel.

I really enjoy the ADC's swivel trough I bought. Lifts on/off my base(out of way for clamp/lift skinning)and can be replaced with small table for skinning mink/mrats etc. I skin beaver in the trough up to the front legs than clamp by the tail in the winch lift to allow the weight of the hide to aid in skinning front legs and down to nose. Saves my hands a lot of strain.

I tried using a trough once and found It to restrictive and and It slowed me down. When using a trough sitting down wouldn't you have to have your knees under the trough to get close enough to skin? Now I just have a 2 X4 X 30"long set on edge and screwed to a piece of plywood. The plywood Is clamped to my bench and the beaver Is placed behind the 2X4 . As you skin you just keep the beaver up against the 2X4 and It just rides up the 2X4 as you skin.

More than one way to skin a cat or beaver or anything, lme. Think you just have to find the ways that works best for you and your skinning area. Try a few different methods till you do. NOW, lol, which is the BEST knife for the job?
