I know as a general rule a coyote will get on a higher surface when checking stuff out. But, around here i find myself on a number of field roads that are raised and off either side is a 10 yard wide grassy area that runs along the road. So, do you set the high spot (the field road) or do you set the lower grassy spot if you only set one, i know a lot will say set both..

If I didn’t have sign, but knew they traveled the area, and had to choose only one, I’d set the road hoping that if they traveled the grassy area, the nighttime air currents would pull the scent down there anyhow.

Two sets two coyotes, one set one coyote, not seen two coyotes in one trap be for.

The road would be my top choice if you had to pick one.

Might look at both. If they are getting pressured, aka shot at, they'll use the lower area for cover.

I'd take the cover. 99% of the time. If the weather allows it I've found much more success in low areas than high in my neck of the woods. Think greyhound hunters, shotgun hunters, deer hunters, any kind of "hunter" in Nebraska that drives by and sees a coyote. They learn to stay low or die.

I know this wont be much help, but I read the sign and set there. Sometimes/some areas they only walk the roads. Other places they stay off the road and down low.

If at all possible set on the sign. If having to make a choice ...

Setting snares I always set the high path and the low path. I would bet the low path catches more fur. If you get some snow, go take a drive and look for tracks. No tracks, no coyotes. Doesn't matter if you have the high spot or low spot. Can't catch what isn't there, even with the best looking set out there.

I have the same type of condition here in some places. You will catch on both if coyotes are traveling.

If a coyote has gone down a trail it will go down it again so set every trail they travel on .

If you only set low, or only set high, you’re potentially missing 50% of the coyotes.

I would put in a big hole set in the grass, and then three sets on the road two blind one urine.

I’m a middle of the road guy (1st pic) if I’m not making dirt holes, but sometimes something just gets their attention and they peal off. Second pic is about 50 yards from the 3rd pic. For whatever reason when they got to that spot they started wondering off. I’d look at the sign but probably set both.

And people wonder why everyone goes to KS!

I gotta cover 200 miles to see that many tracks!

Would take me 200 years to see that many around here unless it's on a a sand bar

Every kid starting out should see that picture so they understand what setting on sign means .

If i waiting to set until i saw that amount of sign i wouldnt be able to set a trap around here. Theres more coyote tracks in that picture than we have in most townships.
