I got my little welder out today. I had pieces of 5/8 3/4 even 1 inch rebar. I cut them to 10 inch wide 12 inches long. I didn't like cutting the points. So I had a bunch of rail road spikes. I cut the heads off used them. I have 0 money in them. Just my time and wire. I made right at 2 dz. Do ya think the rr spikes will work? I had a bunch of #3 chain for free too. I used it up. I have always use the 2/0 loop chain for yrs with no trouble. Just a thought how to make easy cheap drags. The 5/8 and 3/4 weighed in just over 3 pds. The 1 inch weighed in at 4 pds. With 10 to 12 ft of chain. I don't think a coyote or bobcat will take it far. I tried one out in the yard. I didn't go far before it hung up good. Way things are now. Just trying to save a few dollars. Plus I like making my stuff.

I have no experience with drags, but have tons with scrap...use it, and never look back!

I trap primarily with drags, and mine are half to 3/4 inch sucker rod and cotton picker spindles. I make mine 6 inches wide and 10 to 12 inches on the shaft length, most of mine weight about the same as yours. I made some that were 8 inches once and ended up cutting them down to 6 inches, because I got tired of digging big holes, hahahaha!! I know, you don't have to bury them, but that's just the way I learned. The main thing I concentrate on is getting my spindles pointed in opposing 45 degree angles, and at least 3 or 4 swivels in the first 3 to 4 feet of chain from the base of the trap back. I'm sure the ones you have set up will work great happy trapping and tight chains.

Any chance of a picture of the r.r spike drag?
Ive got heaps of those spikes here and could use a few more anchor style drags

I came across some old spikes off a cotton picker I was told. Going to try a few.
