I’ve never tried them so no help here and welding is not that hard. One of the great things about trapping is all the skills that can be or have to be learned. Good luck

I am currently in the process of installing a bunch of PIT pans. They are pretty easy and secure without welds. They work really well on the traps I am altering.

for what target species?........what size traps?

I've found, like many, that bigger is not better.

PIT pans are an upgrade to some traps though. You can find them in a few of those catalogs I urged you to get a couple months ago.

I like the Expand a pans. Depending on the trap some are weld ons and some replace the stock pan.

Being a tinsmith by trade for 30 years I made some bigger pans for some of my traps. I started getting catches that weren't full pad. I changed back to stock pans and learned to use guiding better at the set. Not saying it's the only way to do it but it's what is working for me. Just my $.02.

Depends on the trap and target species. For my trapline, stock pans are fine on coils and you can glue, rivet, slip on a larger pan if needed for something like cats. I just glue a shingle on.

On DLS the PIT pans are a real performance upgrade by taking out all of the pan wobble and adding a really nice night latched rod dog. Necessity? No - many gazillions of critters taken in stock DLS over the years. But if you like to tinker with your gear and can afford them, the PIT are worth looking into. Shouldn't be any welding needed for most traps.

A pop ribit would last longer than jb weld, and no smell

Jumperzee, what do you use to glue the shingle on? I was thinking the same thing but wasn’t sure what glue would hold.

I just use some 3M spray adhesive and a spring clamp. But to be clear - that is for gluing a shingle on a pan with the intended use as exposed cat sets. Shingles will get chewed up after a catch but you can scrape the old one off with a putty knife and put a new one on pretty quick. Riveting an electric box cover will work too. Have played with that for some floppy pan mink traps and it worked well. Never tried JB weld. There's a ton of good posts on pan covers here on T-man. Might take some creative sleuthing to find though.

Personally, I wouldn't enlarge the pan of a trap I was bedding for K9's. I think you'd be inviting a toe catch or the potential for the pan to be obstructed and not fire if you got dirt under it while bedding. A stiff screen over the pan during bedding might give you more surface area if that's what you're after and keep the dirt from under the pan.

I understand and was asking for the same reason. The spray adhesive is a good idea for cat traps.

I have thought about painting just the pans and adding some grit or using a non-skid paint/bed liner. I haven’t heard of anyone doing that though.
