I can see no sign of the new in front of the house in this stamp,,it is a trip hammered 6 spring,,the stamp reads,,
Is this a miss stamp,,or a screw up
We’re the stamps single line stamps, single word stamps or??,,,does any one have an original stamp used when these traps were made

I am pretty sure the springs were stamped with all letters on one die. Due to irregularitys in the metal not all stamps were 100%. Especially the forged and hammered springs.
Here is a stamp that somewhat shows the upper corners of the stamping die...

The dies used to stamp the springs were one piece, struck under a trip hammer. If the surface of the spring was not flat, the lower places did not get stamped. Also, sometimes the die would get hit harder on one side than the other, this is evident in stamps that are deep on one side and light or missing on the opposite.

The stamps wore after time and would cause even more irregularities in the stampings. Nothing that’s steel smashing other things that are steel last for very long. It all wears out.

After mass production was under way at OC, stamping of parts was done using a one-piece (tool steel) block stamp that was locked into the strike arm of a drop or "slam" press operated by steam. The trap part had to be held securely by some sort of matching jig and, if not inserted correctly, would receive an uneven/crooked/double stamp. Parts were stamped before any bending or assembly. Heavily used stamp blocks would wear unevenly as time went on as evident on many parts.
ATC inherited several of the big presses which had been converted from steam. I am told by those who worked at ATC that some parts like pans were stamped individually in jig & press and the worker was paid by the piece; so speed may have overridden accuracy (and safety).
I have several of these stamp blocks in my collection and have seen the numerous factory stamps on display at Tom Parr's museum.

I am attempting to add a few more traps with interesting spring stamps but this computer is kicking my butt so this is all I have got to add. The #2 is on its way to lots of mink and the 1 1/2 came down from him.
